Masonry Repairs

The top portion of the chimney has a cement crown. The cement crown protects the masonry below from weather and water damage. When the cement crown cracks it will allow water to enter the chimney. In cold weather the water can freeze and cause damage to the brick and mortar below. It is important to maintain and protect this area of the chimney.

Brick and mortar are the structures of the chimney that is responsible for the insulation value of the flue. It should be maintained to ensure there are no cracks, spalling or staining along the sides.

Clay tiles are installed during the masonry construction of the chimney. The clay tiles make a single flue compartment for one exhaust system. If there are multiply flue systems there should be a separation between one clay stack and another. Separate clay flues should never be touching. Over time and use deterioration will occur in the form of flacking tile, cracked tile and separating mortar joints in-between tiles. Once deterioration is present the clay tiles will need to be replaced with new flue tile or repaired FireGuard resurfacing system. Another solution is to install a stainless steel liner system.

Lead flashing is installed were the chimney and roof meet. This is to prevent water from entering the home.
